Alabama Driving Careers FAQ

Am I required to own a tractor and trailer before I can obtain my CDL?
While you will need a tractor and trailer to pass the road test, you can usually rent one from an Alabama driving school. In some cases, the price of renting the truck is included in your tuition and fees.

What tests am I required to pass before I obtain my CDL?
You must pass a written exam, a pre-trip inspection, and a road driving test before you obtain your CDL.

How long does truck driving school typically last?
In most cases, the school lasts 3 to 4 weeks; however, the length of training depends on the program you participate in.

What will I learn when I attend truck driving school?
You will learn how to safely operate a commercial truck. You will also learn federal and state driving laws, regulations regarding truck driving, and company driving policies if you are training with a trucking company.

Is there a minimum age requirement to enroll in one of Alabama’s truck driving schools?
The minimum age to obtain your CDL, and enroll in truck driving school, is 21 since federal law states drivers must be 21 or older to drive across state lines.

Am I required to pass a physical before I obtain my CDL?
Yes. The US Department of Transportation requires that you pass a complete physical examination before you can obtain your commercial driver’s license.  This is to make sure you can safely drive.

After I finish truck driving school and pass my CDL exams, can I drive a tank truck?
No. In order to drive a tank truck, you must pass an additional written exam and meet all other requirements that are necessary to obtain a tank endorsement.

What is a reefer driver?
Reefer drivers drive a refrigerated truck that is used to keep the cargo, most often food, frozen.

Do I have to pass a drug test before I obtain my CDL?
Yes, you must pass a drug test before you obtain your CDL. Your employer may also perform routine drug testing during your employment.

Once I have my CDL, is it easy to get a job in the truck driving industry?
There are many opportunities to drive a commercial vehicle in the state of Alabama. Often times, your truck driving school will assist you in finding your new job.  Many schools are also run by truck driving companies that offer graduates jobs after successfully completing the training program.

Can I make a decent living as a truck driver?
Yes! Truck driving can be a long and fulfilling career. Beginning truck drivers often make between $40,000 and $45,000 per year.  The longer you drive, the more you can potentially make.

How often do I need to renew my CDL?
You must renew your commercial driver’s license every two years. You must also take and pass a physical exam every time you renew your CDL.
